Every day our Roc du Maroc race director and former world champion cyclocross Erwin Verveken looks back at the day's events.
Stage 0 - Prologue in and around Ouarzazate
The third edition of the Roc du Maroc started today with a warm-up prologue of 34 km with start and finish in Ouarzazate. This prologue was primarily intended to test the equipment and stretch the legs after yesterday's flight. The ride with an elevation of 492m didn’t count for the overall ranking and was therefore primarily a first easy trip to experience what will follow the next days.
Stefan Vaes and Michael Ossieur of the Granfondoteam.be completed the route in a time of 1.46.27 and were therefore the fastest duo of the day, before Jelle Hanseeuw and Frederik Decaesteker (Laeremans Ednine Cyclingteam) at 7 seconds and Michiel Van Aelbroeck and Bart Seynaeve at 2:57. The first mixed duo with Luc Bellings and Alice Pirard rode a smooth fourth time over the 34km.
The real battle will begin tomorrow with a first stage that starts at the "Kingdom of Heaven" castle just outside Ouarzazate with a Le Mans start where all 180 participants will be positioned next to each other. The ride takes the participants via the world famous Aït-Ben-Hadou Kasbah where many film classics such as Lawrence of Arabia were recorded. The finish is after 115km and 1700m of elevation in Ghasset. We’ll soon see who has the best legs… !
